One of the major challenges for African health systems is dealing with long-term illness. There is broad agreement among health systems experts that the effective delivery of care for chronic conditions of any kind is fundamentally different from that of acute care. Further, there exists a proven model for how to approach care that may extend over a lifetime: the Chronic Care Model. This model is supported by extensive experience and substantial research, chiefly in developed countries, where chronic care has been an issue for a long time.
This quality improvement (QI) training participant manual was developed for presentation at a skill-building workshop conducted by the USAID Health Care Improvement Project at the June 2010 Global Health Council annual conference. The workshop was designed to develop participants’ knowledge and skills in modern health care improvement, including aim-setting, indicator development, process analysis, and developing tests of changes using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles for implementing improvement interventions.

Dr. M. Rashad Massoud, Director of the USAID Health Care Improvement Project, will present on redesigning the patient journey, discussing process mapping and redesign, quality, innovation, productivity, and analyzing the patient journey to identify areas for improvement.
There is a growing international consensus that achieving the Millennium Development Goals for maternal, neonatal and child mortality will require strengthening the health systems of many countries. There is much less agreement on what constitutes health system strengthening and how to approach this objective.
Dr Stephen Kinoti, Senior Quality Improvement Advisor to the USAID Health Care Improvement Project, delivered the keynote address on reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the East, Central, and Southern African (ECSA) Health Community Best Practices Forum and Directors Joint Consultative meeting in September 2009.
